Program Title:  Conservation of Bird Habitats on the Niagara River

​Presented by the Niagara River Greenway Commission

Join us for an informative session about the importance of maintaining a healthy home for our feathered friends.  Learn about the conditions needed to make a healthy and inviting living environment for birds and how local efforts are building and maintaining those habitats.  Learn about the Niagara Greenway and why it is important from Executive Director Greg Stevens. Guest speakers will include Jajean Rose-Burney of the Western New York Land Conservancy who will discus land acquisitions and related conservation strategies: Tim DePriest, Habitat Ecologist from of the  New York Department of Environmental Conservation who will discuss recent restoration projects for avian populations;  Dave Spiering, Great lakes Habitat Restoration Coordinator for New York State Parks will discuss parks efforts toward bird conservation along the Niagara River; and Claudia Rosen, Senior Coordinator for  Community Engagement for Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper will discuss their Living Shorelines program. Program Title: Conserving Critical Places in the Niagara Region: Saving Waverly Woods


​Presented by Marcie Jacklin  and Jay Burney

Waverly Woods in Fort Erie Canada is a critically endangered place. Its long human history and its natural history make this one of the most critical places in the Niagara River Corridor. Marcie is a long time birdwatcher and has visited 12 countries in this endeavor.  She is a member of the Ontario Field Ornithologists, the Buffalo Ornithological Society and all three Niagara nature clubs. she is the President of the Community Voices of Fort Erie which is organized to appeal the development proposals at Waverly Woods.

Jay Burney, US Chair of Birds on the Niagara,  will introduce Marcie and give a brief overview of Buffalo's Outer Harbor, located directly across Lake Erie from Waverly Woods. Both of these places are the Western Gateway to the Niagara River Corridor Globally Significant Important Bird Area.

Program Title: The Habitat Project
Presented by Anne McCooey, Project Manager of the Black Rock Riverside Alliance, in Buffalo (BRRAlliance)

Learn about the BRAAlliance project to certify the City of Buffalo and other areas in Erie and Niagara Counties as  National Wildlife Federation Wildlife Habitat Communities.  Learn how to certify yards and other green spaces as wildlife habitat by using sustainable practices. BRAAlliance is working to complete grassroots efforts to get the City of Buffalo certified as the 15th largest certified habitat community in the NWF network.

Program Title: Niagara Falls, North America's Destination for Gulls- Presented by the Buffalo Audubon Society

Join Naturalist Tom Kerr for a virtual tour of Niagara Falls and the amazing gulls that spend their winter in the Niagara River Corridor Globally Significant Important Bird Area. These are not your french fry stealing parking lot gulls!

Program Title: A Birds Eye View of the Niagara River
​Presented by Amanda Bichel of Birds Canada

Join Amanda Bichel of Birds Canada,  Ontario Important Bird and Biodiversity Areas (IBA) Coordinator. The Niagara River flows 60 km from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario and is important for many gull, waterfowl, and plant species. This will be a talk about the IBA Program, the globally significant Niagara River Corridor IBA, and will provide a fun glimpse of some of the birds and biodiversity along the Niagara River.

Program Title: Five Lessons Learned as a Non-Male Birder
by Mollee Brown

Mollee Brown has been birding in one way or another all of her life- and birding has taken her all around the world in both solo and group travel. Along the way, she has met incredible women who love birds as much as she does, and she has learned a few lesson too. This presentation focuses on experiences that non-males often have while birding.

Mollee is a consultant from Wet Virginia who helps connect people to the natural world. Through her company, , Mollee works with birding and ecotourism businesses and organizations to help them succeed.  Mollee also works with several birding festivals and can often be found behind the scenes of a birding event. In 2020, Mollee and a group of birders launched , which aims to connect birders around the world and provide accessible travel opportunities for birders and community support for birding and conservation organizations.  Mollee is a life long birder who loves to explore in her own backyard as well as around the world.

Join us for an informative and lively roundtable discussion about what we have learned and what are our next steps to work on conservation strategies in the Niagara River Corridor during 2021. This program will be released after the end of BON21 Valentine's Day Weekend.
